Other versions of the SAWICKI name
- The name Sawicki means "saddle-maker" as I have been told.....Jeremy
Sawicki
- As far as I know, we are not Ukranian but Polish. In books that I have
checked, our name is from a place, not a person. (That is, not like "Johnson"
but like "Berliner.").....Marianne Sawicki
- According to my great-great grandfather, the Sawicki tribe migrated from
Australia in the 18th century on a prisoner ship destined for New Zealand. Thanks to the
skills of the Polish Navigator, Vlad Savitsky, the ship missed its mark and ended up on
Riker's Island, NY. Everyone on the ship perished for lack of food and water, except Vlad.
They were expecting a much shorter journey. How he came to survive is up for debate.
Vlad soon realized his navigational mistake and quickly claimed himself ruler of the tiny
island. Due to the lack of natural resources he was forced to abandon Riker's and cross
over to the mainland, where he was welcomed by the natives. They offered their tiny
peninsula, they called Manhattan, in exchange for Vlad's shiny brass sextant. He declined
and instead traded his imprecise navigational tool for some polished clam shells and
colored beads. Eventually, Vlad ran into a group of European explorers who traded 4
barrels of potato vodka for his shells and beads. After sharing a few shots with the
Europeans, Vlad joked about the band of Indians who tried to offload a piece of land on
him. The rest is history. (The descendants of Vlad soon changed their name to Sawicki in
order to avoid any further embarrassment.)
Now that's the REAL history of the Sawicki name.....David
